Howard University's mission is unique. It is the only comprehensive, research-oriented, predominantly African-American university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality at reasonable cost to students of high academic potential. Particular emphasis is placed upon providing educational opportunities for African-Americans, and for other historically disenfranchised groups. It is a place where students come to study, free of oppression of any type, stripe or kind; and a University which engenders and nurtures an environment that celebrates African-American culture in all its diversity. It educates students and prepares them for important leadership positions and responsibility in an increasingly complex world. Howard's faculty members represent a microcosm of the world population of scholars. They comprise the world's most concentrated number of black scholars and a rapidly increasing number of scholars from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South and Central America. Howard's students come from all over the nation and more than 100 countries.
