For more than 76 years, Ringling College of Art and Design has cultivated the creative spirit in art and design students from around the globe - changing the way the world thinks about art and design. Founded in 1931 by noted art collector, real estate magnate, and circus impresario John Ringling, the private, not-for-profit college is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to confer the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in 13 disciplines: Advertising Design*, Broadcast Design/Motion Graphics (beginning fall 2009), Computer Animation, Digital Film, Fine Arts, Game Art & Design, Graphic & Interactive Communication, Illustration, Interior Design, Painting,* Printmaking,* Photography & Digital Imaging, Sculpture,* and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) in the Business of Art & Design*. The College's rigorous curriculum engages innovation and tradition through a strong, well-rounded, first-year Core Studio Program with a deep focus on the liberal arts. Today, 1,200 students study here from 43 states and 31 countries, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; nearly sixty percent of them live on the lush, subtropical, 41-acre residential campus. Ringling College has 140 talented faculty members - all active practicing artists, designers, and scholars - who bring their broad backgrounds and professional experiences into the classroom. During the past several decades, Ringling College has evolved into one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind in the United States, alongside the Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. With a better than 2:1 student to computer ratio, it is also recognized as a leader in the use of technology in the arts. In 2006, BusinessWeek magazine named the College one of the top design schools in the world, and one of only 10 in the entire United States. Ringling College students and alumni are heavily recruited throughout the country by a wide variety of outstanding organizations and they are often recognized for their superior art and design talents in myriad of art and design competitions on the local, regional and national levels. In 2005, for example, the College won one of only 60 National Gold ADDY awards out of 60,000 entries for its Admissions Catalog, which was designed entirely by students. In 2007, Computer Animation alumna Bevin Carnes won a Student Academy Award - out of only 11 given worldwide! This spring, the Society of Illustrators accepted 27 Ringling student works into its Scholarship Competition - more than double any other college in the country - representing approximately 20% of the entire works in the exhibition.
